A memoir on the island of Corsica by novelist Marie Susini to which Chris Marker provides a photo essay. Marker’s portraits focus on the island landscape, architecture and people, subtly hinting at its poverty and troubled history. The cover shows a stark image of a young woman dressed in black that seems to illustrate Susini’s evocative metaphor of Corsica as a mourning woman. Susini worked principally as a librarian and curator at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. She also starred in Robert Bresson’s film Mouchette. A rather overlooked offering from Marker which adds another dimension to his candid and sympathetic approach to travel photography.
