SUSINI (Marie), MARKER (Chris) (Photographs). First edition. 8vo., [90pp.], b&w illustrated boards, no dust jacket as issued. Numerous b&w plates. French text. Paris, Éditions du Seuil, 1981. Boards lightly rubbed with short tears at the foot of the spine. Inscription in pen in the front end paper. A memoir on the island of Corsica by novelist Marie Susini to which Chris Marker provides a photo essay. Marker’s portraits focus on the island landscape, architecture and people, subtly hinting at its poverty and troubled history. The cover shows a stark image of a young woman dressed in black that seems to illustrate Susini’s evocative metaphor of Corsica as a mourning woman. Susini worked principally as a librarian and curator at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. She also starred in Robert Bresson’s film Mouchette. A rather overlooked offering from Marker which adds another dimension to his candid and sympathetic approach to travel photography. £120
